    Furnished Holiday Rentals

    This category includes private residences that are run by the owners, normally they range from apartments to villas, with a kitchen or kitchenette and private rooms. As part of the new rating system for tourist accommodation in France, here are the new categories for furnished holiday rentals.

    The criteria have been reinforced for every category of furnished holiday rental.

    New for furnished holiday rentals : stronger commitments for each category!

    1 star corresponds to inexpensive accommodation. The minimum surface area for a 2-person flat is 12 m² (130 sq. ft.), including kitchenette but excluding toilet and shower).

    2 and 3 stars correspond to mid-range accommodation. In these furnished flats a wider range of services is offered, with beds made upon arrival (by request) or the possibility to rent bath towels and/or table linen. The minimum surface area of a 2-person flat (including kitchenette but excluding shower and toilet) is 14 m² (150 sq. ft.) for a 2-star flat, or 18 m² (190 sq. ft.) for 3-star accommodation. The difference with 1-star flats can also be seen in the average surface area of additional bedrooms, which is 8 m² (86 sq. ft.) for a 2-star flat and 9 m² (96 sq. ft) for a 3-star flat.

    4 and 5 stars indicate high quality and superior quality apartments. They are more spacious, at least 20 m² (215 sq. ft.) of living space (including kitchenette but excluding shower and toilets) for a 4-star apartment and 26 m² (280 sq. ft.) of living space (including kitchenette but excluding shower and toilet) for a 5-star rental. These flats come equipped with facilities such as hi-fi, broadband internet access, clothes dryer, and so on. Other advantages of 5-star accommodation include a TV with international channels, or services such as supply of household linen and beds made upon arrival. Air conditioning is mandatory.

    The Gîtes de France – French Holiday Rentals

    The National Gîtes Federation of France awards non-official labels (non-governmental) to tourism holiday homes and rentals. The labels, awarded on the level of comfort, are accompanied with a rating (from 1 to 5 “ears of corn” or, épis) and a summary detailing the quality and level of facilities of the accommodation.

    Today, there are around 47,000 gîtes (including the overseas territories). The label Gîtes de France ® is the first of its kind in Europe.

    Fitted out respectfully to the local style, the gîte (holiday rental) is a traditional independent house with the necessary creature comforts. You can book for the week or weekend (except in school holidays), all year round. The environment, the quiet, the nature and independence are all definitely special.

    The Gîtes of France are given the task of:

    • promoting comfortablefriendly holiday stays;
    • meeting the special needs of holiday makers seeking authenticconvivial holidays in natural settings, peace and quiet, novelty and wide open spaces;
    • helping to preserve and promote the French countryside and its special cultural heritage;
    • participating in local development and bring stability to the rural population by providing additional resources through tourism.

    Different types of accommodation proposed by the Gîtes of France:

    A gîte
    A holiday home that can be enjoyed by family or friends all year round. A gîte is a private property that can be rented for a week (usually Saturday to Saturday), a weekend or a short stay at certain times of year.

    A gîte for groups
    These larger gîtes (from 12 to 50 people) are perfectly suited for families and groups of friends who would like to spend a weekend or their holidays together.

    Gîtes for children
    During the school holidays, families that are carefully selected by Gîtes de France welcome your children (aged 4 to 15) in the countryside, mountains or by the sea.

    Campsites and Chalets
    There are several options available to you: the “nature” campsites (maximum of 25 plots), the “tradition” campsites (maximum of 150 plots), chalets are usually made for 4 to 6 people with many activities such as fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, archery and so on.

    City breaks
    To discover a town in a different manner, they offer you rentals (such as houses or apartment) as well as bed and breakfast with all the Gîtes de France® know how and quality.
